Purpose through Obedience

Becoming more sensitive to God’s will helps your purpose unfold one faithful step at a time. When you respond to God’s direction with a willing heart and use the fruits of the Spirit to pursue your steps, He can use even the smallest act of obedience to accomplish far more than you imagine.

Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
– Acts 8:30 NLT

Do you like planning and organizing, or flying by the seat of your pants? Following God’s will falls into both of these lifestyles. You are unique, and He loves you. An element of God’s will is obedience to Him, regardless of your personal planning. Steps of obedience are your purpose and rarely arrive with a complete roadmap. Often, they begin with a simple nudge from the Holy Spirit and a willingness to follow where He leads.

Philip experienced this firsthand. God directed him to leave a fruitful ministry and travel to a desert road. The assignment likely seemed unusual and incomplete. Yet, Philip did not receive every detail in advance. He simply obeyed. Along that road, he encountered an Ethiopian official who was searching for truth while reading scripture.

As Philip listened and followed the Holy Spirit’s leading, a conversation began. One question led to another. One act of obedience opened the door for someone to understand the Good News of Jesus Christ. The encounter ended with the Ethiopian official placing his faith in Christ and being baptized. A single moment of obedience carried kingdom impact far beyond what Philip knew on the front end of the angel’s instructions.

You may find yourself in similar situations. God may prompt you to encourage a friend, make a phone call, offer help, share your testimony, or pray with someone. Those moments can seem ordinary. But God often works through ordinary acts of faithfulness to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

You discover purpose while you follow God’s will.

God’s will for you is to be in obedience, positioning you where God can work through you. Each faithful response becomes part of a larger story He is writing. As you trust His direction, you gain a clearer understanding of how He has designed you to serve His kingdom.

God is already at work around you. As you listen for His voice and follow His leading, you will discover more of your purpose intertwined with His will. God will use your obedience as a conduit to implement His purpose.

Today’s One Thing
Pray and be sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit’s direction. Affirm, “I will trust God, obey His leading, and believe my obedience will be used for His purpose.”
