Talk to Your Soul
Your inner voice is always talking. The question is whether it’s telling you the truth. When fear runs the narrative, God’s Word gives you something better and permission to say so out loud.
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.
— Psalm 42:5 ESV
David was not having a good day when he wrote Psalm 42. He was cut off from the temple, surrounded by enemies, drowning in grief. His tears had become his food. His soul felt like it was going under.
But notice what he does. He doesn’t just feel it—he addresses it. “Why are you cast down, O my soul?” He turns toward his own inner life and starts talking. Not venting. Correcting.
This same refrain appears three times across Psalms 42 and 43. David wasn’t forgetting himself and writing it again—he was returning to it on purpose. Like someone who knows a truth so well, they keep pressing in on it.
Lead your soul by speaking God’s Word to yourself!
David was leading his soul, not following it. That’s the difference between letting your emotions narrate your life and choosing to anchor them to the truth in God’s Word. When David opened Psalm 103 with “Bless the LORD, O my soul,” he was commanding his inner life to align with what he knew to be true about God.
You feel the fear. You feel the doubt. You feel the weight of whatever has pressed you down today. And instead of agreeing with all of it, you do what David did—you speak back to it. “God, You are my salvation. I shall again praise You.”
When you redirect your inner voice toward God’s truth, you’re telling your soul “the story my feelings are writing is not the final word.”
David didn’t wait to compose himself. He wept and worshipped in the same breath. Use scripture to point yourself toward the God who holds what you can’t.
TODAY’S ONE THING (Action Step)
Today, when a fearful or discouraging thought rises up, pause and speak back to it. Choose one truth about God from scripture and say it out loud to your own soul.
